This article covers the competition from its beginning in 1955-56.
It was originally known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, or European Cup.
The competition was relaunched as the UEFA Champions League in 1992-93.
The format changed, but UEFA treats the European Cup as the historical predecessor of today’s Champions League.
